How your furnace heating system works for you

Importance of heat exchanger inspections

In order to heat your home, a furnace:

  1. Takes in cold air from your home
  2. Cleans it through an air filter
  3. Heats the cold air up with a burner using a metal heat exchanger

The warm air is then distributed throughout your house through the ductwork in the walls and ceilings. Once the air in your home starts to cool off again, the process starts over.

This constant process of heating up red hot and cooling back down puts a tremendous amount of strain on the metal heat exchanger. The process from hot to cold, causes the metal to expand and contract and over time can cause the seams of the metal to separate or cause it to simply crack. These spots can then cause leaks of dangerous Carbon Monoxide from the burning fuel to be added into your heated air. All manufacturers say there is no amount that is acceptable for a separation or crack in the heat exchanger.
