The Do’s and Dont’s of Drain Cleaning

You don’t realize how many dishes you go through every day until you’re dealing with a clogged drain. Your sink fills up with water and has nowhere to go because grease, chunks of food, and other grime are blocking the water from going down the drain. Clogged drains are a pain in the neck and can cause a lot of hassle and inconvenience. There are several options when it comes to drain cleaning, but not all of them are great for your drain. Here is a list of do’s and don’ts when cleaning your drain.

Don’t – Use store-bought drain cleaner

Store bought drain cleaners can help clear up your drain, but they can also damage your pipes. You should avoid using them on a regular basis because, over time, the chemicals that are designed to break down the junk that is in your drain will also break down your pipes, causing leaks and other problems that are much costlier than having your drain cleaned professionally. A professional, local plumber has the tools and knowledge to provide long-term fixes for your drain issues.

Do – Have a professional jet out your sewer lines

Sometimes a blocked drain isn’t caused by a clog in your drain line; your sewer lines can also become clogged. If you suspect that’s the case, you should call your local plumber and request an inspection to ensure that the problem is indeed your sewer lines. If it is, you’ll need to have them jet your sewer lines clean.

Sewer jetting is a process where plumbers use high pressure water to clear out debris, waste, and anything else that could be causing the clog. Although it is possible to rent a sewer jet, this process shouldn’t be attempted on your own. Unless you’re professionally trained with this type of equipment, it can be very easy to cause damage to your sewer lines, yourself, and the people around you.

Don’t – Try snaking your drains yourself

Another tool that is available to home owners for drain cleaning is the “drain snake.” The snake is a flexible steel cable that can be fed through your drain to clear or pull out food, hair, and other debris that has built up.

The danger of doing it yourself is that the steel cable can get caught on things and snap, sending slivers of steel in every direction. The steel slivers can cause major damage to your drain and possibly cause severe personal injury.

Do – Have a professional snake out your pipes

Having your drain snaked by a professional is easily the best option for a homeowner. It is relatively inexpensive and can keep you from accidentally damaging your pipes. Trust us, have your drains snaked professionally is a lot cheaper in the long run than having to replace your pipes!
